Our Story
Mindful Insurance Solutions is a boutique consulting firm that was founded in Davis, California. Over two decades later, we've grown from our West Coast roots to serve clients nationwide, with expanded operations far to the east coast in Providence, Rhode Island.
At our core, we believe in doing good and doing it well. Founded on service and driven by a deep commitment to the nonprofit sector, we've dedicated much of our work to supporting organizations that strengthen communities and keep families connected. As our reach has grown, so has our breadth of expertise. Guided by a sharp business acumen and a core belief in doing good, we continue to champion nonprofits while also providing tailored insurance solutions to businesses across all industries.
Whether its construction or technology, law firms, local bookstores or even churches, we’re proud to offer thoughtful, strategic consultation in any industry and wherever it’s needed.
Our Leadership
Bill Donaldson - President / CEO
Bill began his career in business banking in Seattle in the early 1980s, supported by a finance degree from Columbia Pacific University. In 1985, he moved to Davis, California, where he dedicated himself to advancing the nonprofit sector through strategic partnerships and collaborative leadership.
Over two decades, Bill played a pivotal role in integrating AmeriCorps into California’s social and health services, expanding service capacity and strengthening nonprofit networks statewide. His commitment to service has remained central throughout his career.
For the past 18 years, he has served as President and Chairman of the Board at Mindful Insurance Solutions, guiding organizations in resource optimization, risk management, and tailored employee benefit strategies. He also chairs the Head Start West Association, continuing his mission to empower service-driven organizations.
A widower, Bill enjoys traveling to Europe and remains deeply committed to creating meaningful change through service and leadership.
Michelle Winchell - VP / COO
Michelle is a seasoned insurance professional with over 35 years of experience, specializing in Employee Benefits and Commercial Lines, including General Liability, Property, Auto, Directors and Officers, Workers’ Compensation and more.
Her career began in medical coding and billing for emergency room physicians, followed by seven years at Kaiser Permanente managing strategic accounts. For the past 20+ years, Michelle has excelled as a broker and consultant, with a focus on serving Head Start programs and domestic violence prevention nonprofits, delivering tailored solutions with expertise and care.
When she’s not advocating for her clients, Michelle cherishes time with her children and pets, often escaping to the tropics or soaking up the sun in Hawaii, her hometown of San Diego, Lake Tahoe, or any waterfront destination. Passionate about protection—whether for businesses or her loved ones—Michelle brings warmth and dedication to everything she does.
Shawn Gibbs - VP Rhode Island Office
Shawn Gibbs is a Rhode Island native and leads the East Coast operations at Mindful Insurance Solutions. A University of Rhode Island alumnus, he discovered his passion for service, development and risk management through serving in roles with the University’s Title IX Coordinator and the Administrative Office of Risk Management while he completed his studies.
Shawn began his consulting career assisting clients with business growth through strategic property acquisitions, which evolved into a focus on protecting their businesses through risk management and financial strategy. Like the rest of the Mindful team, he is licensed in commercial and benefit lines, offering clients comprehensive coverage solutions.
Billy James - VP Client Success & Sales
With over 13 years in the insurance industry, I’ve found that helping others achieve financial security and wellness peace of mind gives me great satisfaction in a career. After a college career that started in Chico, then finished in 2000 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, I’ve found my way back to the Bay Area where I live with my wife and two children. Caring for and watching them grow allows me to have a greater sense of compassion and caring and want to make this world a better place for them. Working in the insurance industry allows me to apply that same sentiment to the clients I work with.
When I’m not working, you can find me doing whatever activity my children have on the calendar. Staying active and outdoors is a must, and away from ‘screens’ as much as we can. Though, teaching them the importance of Seinfeld is the exception (and also a must!) That, and music from the 80’s and 90’s.

Our company is deeply rooted in community engagement, driven by a genuine commitment to supporting families and creating lasting impact. We actively collaborate with nonprofits and Head Start programs to promote early childhood education and family well-being. Over the years, we’ve participated in a wide range of fundraising events and awareness campaigns for just causes—some inspired by personal experiences, including the loss of loved ones to illness. These moments have strengthened our resolve to give back, whether through charity runs, volunteer efforts, or resource donations. For us, community involvement isn’t just a responsibility. Instead, it’s a reflection of our values and the people who’ve shaped our journey.
